Kinja'd!!!6 Kinja'd!!! 21

I’ve been trying to expand my driving playlist which currently has about 60 songs. I’m in need of more songs, so every once in awhile I’ll share a song and ask for recommendations based on the song and genre. First up is the song I’ve been binge-listening to because it’s catchy, British, and I’m a sucker for instrumental sections.

Kinja'd!!!

Anyone have any recommendations based on this?

I don’t have any recommendations unfortunately, but now I have a new song to add to mine.

Moar prog rock! Start with King Crimson’s “In the court of the Crimson King,” (maybe go with 21st Century Schizoid Man or Epitaph if you have to pick one song). Really all of the pre-Adrian Belew Crimson is good, “Red” especially.

My other favorite prog album is ELP’s “Tarkus.” The 20-minute title track is epic and amazing. Side 2 is pretty much hot garbage though.

Try even more Yes. Some of thier live recordings are incredible, same goes for the extended versions.

Also, Emerson, Lake & Palmer if you like Yes.

I started watching an anime last night that uses Roundabout as the outro. Never in a million years did I think that those two worlds would mix.

I think the Styx fits into this category of catchy, somewhat proggy stuff. I really enjoy when Sweet Madame Blue or Miss America comes on with my music going on shuffle. You could also try some Emerson Lake & Palmer or possibly even some Pink Floyd into this category, depending on how weird you want your music.

Probably not related but other driving music I can enjoy is like synthwave/outrun stuff. In the same regard, the soundtrack from Tron: Legacy is really fun to listen to while driving at night, especially in empty urban areas.

I never heard of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band up until a few years ago. Catchy? Check. British? Well, Scottish... Instrumental sections? Oh yeah. I’m hooked.

Big prog fan, but some of the Yes stuff gets to be, well, a lot. I like The Yes Album, Close To The Edge, and Fragile. That’s about as much as I can do.

I finished Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency (the first 26 episodes) of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure this past weekend. That’s why I immediately downloaded Roundabout. :p

Not Prog, but for some reason I feel compelled to recommend Roxy Music’s Mother of Pearl. It’s off my favorite album of theirs, and it takes an amazing turn toward the end of the song.

Tombo the Electric Bloodred samples the riff and goes off into loud noise.

British, catchy, and with instrumentals:

Morrissey’s Boy Racer - any song with a Sierra Cosworth is a winner.

Teenage Fanclub’s Alcoholiday:

Neil Jung off their Grand Prix album is also a fine song.

Other Yes is also good... If you like that particular 60-70’s-bluesy-prog-style you might try some Triumvirat (Classically trained German Prog Goodness) and/or The Move (The bluesy sound that later became ELO), and maybe even some CAN (The Original Weirdos, their percussion and rhythm style is widely credited as an influence by early techno and industrial artists). These are all on my driving mix.

Triumvirat:

The MOVE:

CAN:

This one is long, but the whole album is excellent...

Other Yes: (in case you didn’t already know...)

Just an update, I’m enjoying the heck outta Epitaph and 21st Century Schizoid Man! I couldn’t pick between the two so I downloaded both. Thanks for the great suggestions!

I also downloaded Tarkus but haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet.

Awesome! The whole album those songs are from is amazing, and is just about the best introduction to prog rock you could ask for. All Crimson’s stuff through at least Red is worth a listen (Red is super lean and aggressive for prog, and is what inspired Kurt Cobain to go with a three-piece lineup).
